You are Carbon in the Atmosphere

High above the clouds soaring with the greatest of ease, your motions are determined on a whim of the wind. Light floods in from space, bounces off the surface of the earth and sometimes bounces back off of you and back to the earth again like a game of pong.

You are a chain of carbon. Carbon makes up about 0.039% of the atmosphere, mostly in the form of carbon dioxide. Its primary action in the atmosphere is trapping of infrared radiation heat.

Choose PHOTOSYNTHESIS. Plants use sunlight to combine carbon dioxide from the atmosphere with water to form carbohydrates that store energy this energy and keep carbon in the tree. But did you know that 50% of the carbon stored by plants will return to the atmosphere through respiration as the plant lives and grows?

It sure is cold and lonely up here with hardly and neighbors. Lets go make some new friends on the great green planes across the globe below.

The process by which energy from the sun is converted into chemical bond energy in sugar.

6CO2 + 6H2O + photon = C6H12O6 + 6O2

Carbon Dioxide + Water + Light = Sugar + Oxygen

Choose DIFFUSION. Most of the carbon on Earth resides in the oceans -- 50 times more than what exists in the atmosphere. Carbon is often dissolved into the water with the crashing of waves or in extreme ocean storms.

The blue mass below is a rocking carbon party full of our friends. Let's go join in the fun!

The process by which things move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.

Rate of Change in Concentration = Difference in Concentration Between Two Regions
